Hi all,
I am wondering if anyone knows any good books or articles on how European colonies in Africa and Asia actually functioned. Pieces on specific regions or periods are welcome.
I would really like to see how labor was mobilized and organized, how local elites were integrated into the system, and the degree to which the colonial administrations directed economic activity. I have come across interesting bits and pieces of how certain colonies worked, such as the consumption quotas of monopoly goods levied on villages in French Indochina, and of course the infamous Belgian rubber quotas, but I am curious if there has been a more comprehensive treatment from the perspective of political economy on the operation of any/all European colonies.
Thanks!
